With the help of the community, we will soon have a dog park in Egg Harbor!

We are thrilled to announce that a conditional use permit has been issued by the Village of Egg Harbor for a dog park to be located in Village View Park on Church St, south of the Peg Egan Performing Arts Center. The park will have two, fenced sections; one for small dogs and a more spacious area for large dogs. Having a place where dogs can run freely and play with other dogs is a valuable asset to both dog owners and our community.

The Village of Egg Harbor has granted use of the land, but in order for our dogs to be safe, the area must be fenced and that’s where all of us come in. We need to come up with the funds to build the fence, provide benches and after that, add a weather shelter for the human visitors. The fallow area within Village View Park that has been designated for our new dog park lies along Church Street from the driveway to Harbor School Road. The area is approximately 100’ x 375,’ with an elevation change and shade trees that will make this park distinctive from those in Sister Bay and Sturgeon Bay.

As is the best practice in dog park design, we will need a 6’ fence with double entrance gates, plus a gate between the two sections within the park. To accomplish the purchase of the fence, installation, benches, picnics tables and a shelter, we must raise $20,000.

For a $200 donation, you may become the sponsor of a 10’ fence section. Each 10’ section will have a metal plaque giving the donor’s name or memorial dedication. A $500 donation will buy a picnic table with, of course, a plaque acknowledging your gift. A donation in the amount of $1000 will provide the weather shelter. A donation of any amount will be acknowledged with a listing on our donors’ register and earn a bag of dog treats, courtesy of Greens N’ Grains.

This is not a 501 c 3 donation and therefore not tax deductible. If you would like to be a part of this exciting new amenity in Egg Harbor, please make out a check to “Harbor Hounds” and include your mailing address, email address and send your donation to:

“Casino Jack and the United States of Money,” a probing investigation into the lies, greed and corruption surrounding D.C. super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his cronies.

Directed by Alex Gibney. Starring Jack Abramoff, Tom DeLay, Hal Kreitman.

This portrait of Washington super lobbyist Jack Abramoff, from his early years as a gung-ho member of the GOP political machine to his final reckoning as a disgraced, imprisoned pariah, confirms the adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction. A tale of international intrigue with Indian casinos, Russian spies, Chinese sweatshops, and a mob-style killing in Miami, this is the story of the way money corrupts our political process.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney once again wields the tools of his trade with the skill of a master. Following the ongoing indictments of federal officials and exposing favor trading in our nation’s capital, Gibney illuminates the way our politicians’ desperate need to get elected, and the millions of dollars it costs, may be undermining the basic principles of American democracy. Infuriating, yet undeniably fun to watch, Casino Jack is a saga of greed and corruption with a cynical villain audiences will love to hate.

The film making process of Casino Jack was a monumental work…

Digitalfilms blogger Oliver Peters says “Like most documentary film editors, Alison Ellwood, has travelled that road from the start. Casino Jack was a three-and-one-half year long project, with hundreds of hours of archival and original footage in a range of formats, like DVCPro, Betacam-SP, HDCAM, DVCAM, DVD and QuickTime movies.” He discussed the process with her to find out how she was able to wrap her head around this much material and develop the story arc.

A study at London’s King’s College, run by prominent Croatian nutritionist Lejla Kazinic Kreho, former student in the bio-medical sciences department, finds that “pickled cabbage”, or sauerkraut, is as effective as the popular drug Viagra at increasing sexual function. Kreho makes the claim in her book Nutrition of the 21st Century. She says most people are unaware that cabbage is one of the most-powerful natural aphrodisiacs in the world.

According to the Austrian Times, Kreho says, “The knowledge collected at King’s College shows pickled cabbage is the best natural Viagra. It may be hard to believe that saurkraut is one of most powerful aphrodisiacs, but the British data is conclusive.”

Talking to Croatian daily’s Vecernji List, she says: “I can only suggest all men try it. Eat cabbage twice a day and observe how your sexual power increases.”

Several years ago Andy and Jennifer Sauter Sargent left Door County for parts farther north. They began Spirit Creek Farm, where they now make lacto-fermented kraut and kimchi on the beautiful south shore of Lake Superior, in Cornucopia, Wisconsin.

“After a season of growing his own cabbage and pounding kraut, Andrew decided to start making lacto-fermented food for retail sale,” explains Jennifer. “We spent the winter of 2007 building a certified kitchen and researching, preparing and pre-ordering vegetables (from other local organic farmers) so we would be prepared to bring our products to market in the late summer and fall of 2007.”

Lactic acid fermentation is an ancient food preservation process that actually of enhances the end product. Active biological cultures that live on the surface of vegetables turn the sugars in the vegetables into lactic acid. No special culture of lactic acid bacteria is needed because these bacteria are already present on raw cabbage. Afterwards, lacto-fermented vegetables contain more lactobacilli, a pro-biotic which aids digestion.

“Here are some fantastic little worker bees,”says Jenn. “Our season is quiet now but the harvest is beginning… Here we go!”

White Sauerkraut; Ingredients: Cabbage, Water, Sea Salt

Kim Chi (Korean Fermented Vegetables; Ingredients: Cabbage, Carrots, Radishes, Onion, Garlic, Ginger, Water, Hot Peppers, Sea Salt

If you are in the neighborhood, the Harbor Landing restaurant in Egg Harbor now makes a delicious Kim Chi pizza, using Spirit Creek Farm’s lacto-fermented vegetables supplied via Greens ‘n Grains.

The healthy options have expanded here at Greens N Grains Natural Food Store (GNG) in downtown Egg Harbor. Having completed a graceful and complimentary 1000 sq. ft. expansion into the adjacent storefront space, our new “Fresh” Deli is undergoing a “gentle” opening… with a “grand” opening to follow.

The “Fresh” vegetarian and raw food deli and juice bar is open daily from 7 am to 5 pm. Cindy Knigge, who some healthy food lovers may remember from her work at the former Singing Bowl in Ephraim, has taken on the role of “un-cook,” placing a strong emphasis on her love of raw food cuisine.

“We’re focused on raw food and natural foods, whole foods, nutrient dense, whole grain, organic, vegan and gluten-free foods,” Cindy explains.

“Fresh” serves a variety of pressed-to-order organic veggie juices and fruit smoothies as well as a wide variety of raw and natural food main courses including pastas, lasagnas, sandwiches, Panini’s, wraps, a soup of the day, salads, baked goods and desserts. Coming attractions include a tea bar and organic coffees.

Greens N Grains is Door County’s only full service natural food store, offering a complete line of groceries including bulk nuts and grains, spices, organic coffees and teas, healthy pet foods as well as a full selection of cleaning products which are environmentally friendly. GNG has a broad array of supplements and herbs, protein powders and other nutritional products to help the consumer take control of their own health. The store is very pleased to offer many locally grown and manufactured products including as much local produce as possible, eggs, beef, chicken and even local yak burgers.

It’s summer and most gardeners are doing battle with weeks. But botanist Dr. James A. Duke has a different take on some common weeds: he eats them and boils them for tea. Dr. Duke has written many books on the healing power of plants and herbs, including The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook: Your Everyday Reference to the Best Herbs for Healing. Here he shows Wall Street Journal reporter Anne-Marie Chaker his garden and points out common weeds that make good eating. Now, don’t get all fired up by Dr. Duke and run out and start harvesting weeds for dinner. Some are poisonous and you need an expert to guide you. Take a look:

On June 12, a powerful new film will hit the theaters, one that exposes the food industry. Today, a handful of corporations control our nation’s food supply.

Participant Media’s social action campaign for FOOD, INC. has several initiatives, among them: promoting the Congressional reauthorization of the Childhood Nutrition Act that will remove junk food and sugary drinks from school cafeterias and replace them with healthier choices; legislation to require chain restaurants to provide nutritional information about their menu offerings; and a downloadable high school curriculum that will help educators teach these important issues in their classrooms.

Learn more about the film and the courageous men and women who, in spite of fear of retaliation and lawsuits from giant corporations, refused to stand by and do nothing.

Read the companion book, Food Inc.: A Participant Guide: How Industrial Food is Making Us Sicker, Fatter, and Poorer-And What You Can Do About It, which provides resources, tips and ways you can help make food safer.

Ah! June is Clean Air Month but anytime is the perfect time to look at what you can do to breathe easier and better. Here are a few ideas:

1. Drive less: Cars are a major source of air pollution. By leaving your car at home one day a week, you prevent 55 pounds of air pollution each year from being emitted into our environment.
2. Take public transit whenever possible, carpool, or telecommute and work from home.
3. Refuel in the evening and never top off: Putting gas into your vehicle releases Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air. Throughout the day, these VOCs mix with oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the air, “cook” in the summer heat, and form ground-level ozone. Refueling in the evening decreases the opportunity for VOCs to form into ozone.
4. Avoid consumer spray products: Hair spray alone contributes 12 tons of pollution per day. When selecting consumer products, consider solids, sticks, and gels instead. They are more environmentally friendly consumer choices.
5. Eat less meat: Livestock use a lot of energy — beef cattle need to eat 40 calories of food to produce 1 calorie of protein.

These suggestions come from HelptheAir.org.

Greens N Grains Natural Food Store (GNG) in downtown Egg Harbor is undergoing a delightful expansion of their existing store and respective services. Located in the big, purple, classic building in downtown Egg Harbor at 7821 Highway 42, owner Kathy Navis is adding an additional 1000 sq. ft. by expanding into the adjacent space and enclosing a section of the front porch.

As part of the expansion, GNG’s selection of personal care products for hair care, skin care, toothpastes etc., will be greatly expanded. The gluten-free section will also be expanded, adding to the current selection. The healthy pet food department will triple in size, as well as adding many new options in the organic wine and beer section.

The store is very pleased to offer many locally grown and manufactured products including as much local produce as possible. At present they stock local, sustainably grown salad greens, spinach, kale, swiss chard by Cherrydale Farm and local sprouts and wheatgrass juice. They also sell local eggs, beef, chicken and even local yak burgers.

The most exciting part of the expansion is the addition of a vegetarian and raw food deli and juice bar. The deli will offer a wonderful selection of raw foods prepared by our own “un-cook,” Cindy Knigge. The new deli will also feature freshly-pressed veggie juices, fruit smoothies, healthy bakery, a tea bar and organic coffees.

The construction is under way and is being undertaken in the most sustainable way possible. Birmingham Builders of Sturgeon Bay is doing the construction and they are carefully removing doors and windows and reusing them. They are pulling nails and reusing lumber, trim materials, insulation, plumbing fixtures, etc.. The flooring will be reused as much as possible and new flooring will include sustainable grown bamboo provided by Carpet One of Door County.

The staff of Greens N Grains is grateful for the local support and welcomes requests for new products that you would like to see included in the new expansion.

Greens N Grains is currently open daily from 10 am – 5 pm in downtown Egg Harbor at 7821 Hwy 42, and can be reached at 920.868.9999 or email at info@greens-n-grains.com, the website is Greens-N-Grains.com.
